Hi guys

I have a yearling port mac which I've had for about a week now. I have noticed that since she came to me she seems to be swallowing a lot and has a slight bulge under her jaw/throat area (no photos at the moment sorry). I haven't seen any drooling, mouth gaping or heard any wheezing usually associated with an RI though. I think I should take her to the vet, but am I just being paranoid? (I'm a newbie). She's being kept in a tub on a heat cord with temps about 30-32 degrees. I asked the guy I got her off but he says he never noticed anything. She ate a week ago with no probs.

Thanks for your help!

mine does that a lot, thought it was ri but took to vet and was something else.
don't be surprised if she does start wet hissing or wheezing a bit, mine got worse when she was ready to shed.
last time she did it though i turned the heat up a couple degrees and she's better, so maybe try a bit more heat and give it a week. if not better then vet for sure

Can often be caused by nasal congestion prior to shedding. If the animal is tongue-flicking normally and feeding, just keep an eye on it. These are often the first signs of RI - lack of appetite and either not tongue flicking or the tongue may stick together so it isn't forked as it emerges.

You might find it will shed in a few days and return to normal.

Thanks so much for the help guys. She seemed to be getting worse so paranoid snake parent that I am, I took her to the vet. She doesn't have a full blown infection, but it is the beginnings of one, so the vet's put her on a course of antibiotics. Better to be safe than sorry!
