Snake at vet

I took my Darwin to the vet on Saturday as he had a pink tinge to his belly. The vet said it looks like the start of scale rot, and said to use an antibacterial cream and betadine baths, or to leave him at the vet and they would give injections and baths at the vet.

I am allergic to betadine so I choose to leave him at the vet.

I went to visit him yesterday and found they are keeping him in the pillow case I brought him in, tied up and in a clip lock container. They said he is on a heat mat, but now I am worried as if he is being heated he has no way of getting away from the heat inside the bag. There was no thermostat or water either.

So I called the vet to speak to him about it and they said he was not at work today, call tomorrow, which I will do, but in the meantime, should I be worried or is this standard at the vet with a snake?

Why dont you just treat your snake yourslef with the iodine/betadine and wear latex gloves so you dont get it on your hands? that way you could have your snake at home with you but you wouldnt be able to handle him obvsiously after the application of the betadine but once he was 100% you could make sure all the residue iodine was rinsed off before you handled him again without gloves? you would save a heap of money too!

I have felt that the vet I use charges a lot for simple consultations, but then again they do provide a medical service (without the benefit of medicare) and when the ***** does hit the fan, it doesnt cost as much as I would expect (and in fact, I have had one of my girls treated for free, including xrays as I was out of work at the time and couldnt afford it).

Some vets may be in it for the money, but I dont think that is common (if someone wants to spend that much time at university, in order to get into some form of medicine for the money, they would be much more likely to train to become a specialist people doctor, in my opinion).

I'm fairly certain I know the vet you are using Jye, and I can confirm that they use thermostats. No decent reptile vet would use a heat mat without one.
I can also say that if its the vet I think it is, you have nothing to worry about in regards to quality, care, and serious value for money for the level of care provided. Who would ever expect a vet to look after a dog or cat for that period of time INCLUDING DAILY TREATMENTS for $200? Thats exceedingly cheap!

hey guys i have been reading this thread for a while now and to be honest some of the comments have made me slightly angry. im am currenlty at uni doing science hoping to move into vet next year or the year after. i just wanted to say that the average salary of a vet for the first few years is around $40,000. id also like to add that i have done work experience with a family friend in queensland and not only were we on call most of the two weeks i was up there we were up at 5 in the morning and not home till late at night, i spent 4 hours at a claving in a storm that we drove an hour to get to and didnt get home till 2 in the morning, we went into the hospital at all hours to do emergancy surgery and i loved it ALL. in no way am i complaining what i am trying to point out is the effort we are willing to put out in order to help an animal in need. drugs, food, care, staff, facilities, equipment and all the other stuff comes at a cost and yes it may seem high at times but most of us who want to or are doing vet do it because we want to help animals that need us not for the money, and sorry for the rant but i think alot more respect is deserved in this area imo

i had one of my pitbulls in the animal hospital at Ryde for 7 days, it was $1000 a day for her to be there.

Unfortuanatly she had to be put down, but her brain went to the scientists hopefully to help similar conditions in the future.

The vets were amazing and very comforting for myself, i still have the card that they sent me after Goldie was put down.

YAY for vets!
