g'day,

just wonderin if anyone could help ID this little guy (if i can work out how to post the pics), hes about 2-3 feet long and has markings that look like an adder but his body shape is obviously nothing like an adder..... i found him at Bringelly near Penrith.

And before anyone says anything no i didnt keep him i released him not five minutes after these pics were taken, i know its illegal and could endanger my pythons with diseases etc, i only kept him to take these pics cause i couldn't get a positive ID by googleing his description.

Thanks in advance....

How sure are you? I'm not takin the mickey, i just didnt think he looked like the pics i found of eastern browns

It's a Brown, search for pics of juvenile Browns and then you'll see the resemblance.

Their variable in colour pattern etc etc..

The one you posted photos of looks damn nice, better than any wild ones ive seen at least.

100% sure. Catch heaps very similar to that 1 around where i live. They are really common.

Cheers people, thanks very much. it had me absolutely bamboozled. much appreciated. the stripes made me think he was a tiger snake but a mate who knows a bit about herps said theyre not in the sydney area....he wasnt very aggressive for a brown.

There are areas around Sydney where u can get Tigers but they are far more common west of the mountains.

very distingushed markings on that little fella, nice find.

jase75, some of the best looking tigers i'va come across in the wild have been on the outskirts of the sydney basin.
some of the largest i've come across have been in the blue mountains, most have had high yellow markings, very nice colours indeed.

Anyone ever heard of tigers in or around the penrith or wollondilly shire area? jase75 or bundybear where have you guys seen em?

yup, eastern brown, the markings will go away once it grows up

Im from Bathurst, and we get heaps and heaps of Tigers around here. Iv found them at Kanangra walls but never any further east than that. But im sure there are heaps in suitable places east of the mountains.I would imagine there are places around the Nepean River where they would be found.

You can get tigers around there, especially around some of the creeks etc around Emu Plains and the closer to the Blue Mountains you go.

Very nice Brown, glad you didn't get nipped by it though.

JasonL is very right, up on the Fraser Coast i saw a Brown get run over, it was a dark chocolate colour with a pale yellow belly with the mottled pattern on the belly. I saw a photo of one up here that was almost as red as tomato sauce and another relocated animal that had bands similar to the one above. Stunning animal. I think Richard Shine's book shows a photo of Eastern Browns (babies) that all had different markings and colours with the comment that some will retain the pattern and others don't.

i found a tiger in the quarries in emu plains just at the foot of the blue mountians, dark markings, also found them around the lindan area and sunny corner, the sunny corner specimin was a buautiful black and bright red, try to get a photo up in a minute.

Yeah i got a mate who has come across a couple of tigers around the northern road area in Cranebrook..................
He found a dead one and has it in a jar so i know his not full of it lol

i'm not really into brown snakes, but that is a very nice specimen

the variety in pattern formation and colouring varies to the extreme in browns ,,it can even be free of mottled pattern under its belly ..shades of creamy/white to jet black ...but what doesnt change is the head formation study the ebs head and regardless of colour you will learn to id from that alone ....
