It's funny Australis - but kiwis are very complacent with their environment in regards to venomous creatures - so much so that the government was able to put an advertising campaign up for river safety in NZ.
The advert was quite clever... It showed a beautiful, tranquil river in NZ, surrounded (or girt) by lush green forest, then it quickly flashed to a river in Australia where a huge croc was attacking an animal on the side of a river bank, huge splashes and roars etc.... Then it would flash back to the river in NZ where there was calm and tranquillity and beautiful setting... Then back to the river with the crocs fighting over territory, splashing, thrashing etc... Then back to the NZ river all serene and beautiful.
The end caption is - Which river has killed more people - of course you'd think the croc infested NT river - but in fact this is not the case - it was the beautiful serene river on NZ.
Can't recall the exact caption - but it;s something along the lines of look before you leap - submerged objects can kill... Blah blah....
Anyway - you get the idea - yes, kiwi's are very aware of their environment and the fact that predatory animals are non-venomous.
Slothhead - most kiwis will walk through the bush in jandals (thongs) without a care in the world.
Not saying you can't do that here - but you can't do that here and be completely safe!
Once again, elude to the BTS epidemic of Guam - now we know full well that the BTS isn't deadly - but boy does it cause some issues in Guam - I don't see the same happening in NZ with BTS - but I'd worry about species that can adapt to the cooler winters - as previously mentioned tigers, copperheads etc....
