mmmm very very interesting reading indeed, i guess like most of the older lot i too can remember some of the better times we had, hell petrol when i started to drive was around 34 to 36 cents a litre and people moaned when it went upto 40 cents, and a packet of cigges was just over 40 cents for a packet of black and white or not much more for viscount.those days kids could buy ciggies, every sunday i walked a good distance to buy the papers for my dad, grab a packet of cigs and for my effort i got abt 20 cents to spend, and i got heaps for it..........
But not only all those things about building your own stuff and using your mind... but i believe some of the food was better, tasted like it should taste, not how it is all changed supposedly for the better...mmm a big juicey peach where the juice ran down your chin... and a hamburger was a hamburger and not a plastic mac

cheers

I can't remember what petrol was when I started to drive, but I remember being in the car with my mum a few years before, and we decided not to fill up at a certain petrol station because at 14 cents a litre, it was too expensive. In 1980 when we went to NZ and saw that petrol there was 48 cents, I remember thinking that it was more than double back home.

At school in the 70's I could buy Rainbow Balls (also called Rainbow Monsters) at 5 for a cent, meat pies were 20c (and a little thing of sauce was 1c or 2c), Smiths Crisps were 14c a pack, paddlepops were 10c and icypoles were 8c.

And in the sixties, when you could go out to do the shopping and leave the front door unlocked........

I can remember Schooners(pots) of beer for 39c. For a Saturday night out used to catch the train from Blackburn to Glenferrie, then a tram to St. Kilda and go ice skating at St. Moritz Ice Rink. Then over the road to Luna Park for some more fun. Other nights we used to go to a big dance called Springfield Rock at the Springfield Town Hall. All on very safe Public Transport(in those 60's days). Sharpie Dances at Box Hill town hall. OMG! Must be getting old. All these memories.

Isn't this the same generation that's now getting cancerous moles removed because throughout their early years they were out in the sun all day, 'recieving all the benefits' from the harmless UV?
I'm sure there's a few (read:a ga-zillion) of you that fell into the trap of picking up smoking 'cause it was cool and the dangers weren't totally understood. A habit you may have picked up while you were at TAFE?.<How are those high power, high income careers working out for you?Lol J/K! :p

We're making a pretty big assumption (or is it an ideolody that's being re-inforced? ) that the 'good ol' days' were actually better. It's pretty interpretive.

Who's to say what's a better childhood? I'll take my books and internet and X-Box over playing in the dirt any day. Lol

Yeah, out here in our out -of- Renmark street, doors left unlocked, keys left in cars, boat motors not padlocked, kids playing/sitting in the middle of the street, neighbours that keep a lookout for any strangers that might be lurking. We don't live in each others pockets, but will always help each other out, and keep an eye on things if people go away on hols. Our little street of about 13 houses with hobby blocks attached is a slice of heaven I reckon. :)

what ever happened to metro gum,and sunnyboys which were 6 cents, and as far as the cancer moles it only the last 10 years they came out back in the old days the ozone layer was fine

Knock and run, Ha!. Dog faeces in a paper bag. Set it on fire then knock and run. Householder comes out sees fire and stamps on it to put it out. What a cack.
Er! If it happened to you it wasnt me. Im to old. Didnt have doors when I was a kid

I was waiting for that one to come out :)

A friend and I once did that one with steamed vegetables instead of dog sh!@... I can't for the life of me understand why, I guess it was something to do with being stupid kids :)

You are joking, aren't you?

I would much rather live a fun life and have a cancerous mole thing pulled out of me somewhere along the lines than sit like a sardine for the sake of making it last a few extra years. I have the odd ciggarette, perhaps I'll die from it, so be it. Perhaps I'll die in a car accident, perhaps I'll be killed by a snake or in a skydiving accident. I know I'll never die from a playstation mishap... but then again I could trip over the cord and become a quad or get electrocuted.....

Sieze the day.

Sdaji, you rock!!! I really wanted to disagree with the original post but i couldnt find anything none-smartass to say in reply..Thanks dude!!!

Cheers, Alan.

P.s, im with you all the way on this one, id prefer the mole than the extra years of life. You cant build a cubby or tree house at 65 years old can ya??? LOL

Go the old days reading this post makes me remember the old days
i rode motorbikes and made billycarts to tow behind motorbikes, treehouses, pushbikes ,sport, prank phonecalls, firecrackers ,burning down a barn there are so many things to many to list

So did anyone ever try waterjumps on their BMX ? we used to tie a thong on a piece of rope to our bikes and ride flat out down hill over a jump into the river then use the thong to pull the bike out and do it again then we used to have to repack all the bearings with grease
Also our bikes never had brakes we used to use our foot on the back tire to stop ahh the good old days ..... It wasent a good day unless you had a wound of somekind to show for it .

I could go on forever with stories but my hands would get tired

Thanks for the great post Alan

To the lads above who replied to my post..and anyone else wanting to reply (go for it by the way  ): Maybe I shouldn't have made that last comment about preferring to play video games than sitting inside (I'm a nerd, what can I say? Lol). It went against the point I was attempting to make.
The point I was trying to make is that there's positives and negatives to both sides....the negatives of your argument hadn't really been discussed from the side of the 'indoor kid', while the negatives of the 'indoor kid' had been discussed by you. I think that makes sense? Lol.

I was lucky enough to have both sides of the coin. I loved running about in the mud after the rain trying to kill the dragon with a stick, but the dragon was from Super Metroid, and I was Luke Skywalker.

*Alan, I appreciate that you held back from saying something smartarse. Nice of you. :)

**Thanks Greg. :)

Vat69, yeah i agree, there are and were bad sides to it, but who wants to remember the bad things when all the good stuff was just so good?? I prefer sitting around with a beer talking about the old days and the funny stories having a laugh rather than trying to comiserate with someone for the bad times.

Cheers, Alan.

P.s, Who remembers playing catch and kiss....phwoaaaa i loved that game!!!!

Shermy, you would also have to build yourself a room for your reptiles, sorry. Dave and I only live in a shed at the moment. Getting ready to buy Dave's Mums house and block next door in near future. Might I say, shed is very comfy tho'.

Alan: Totally agree.
Let me tweak my argument a little.
The *postives* of the other side hadn't been discussed. Ahh that's better.

And now, with my point made and aknowledged, I shall bow out and let all you oldies reminisce of days of old. Days abscent from pixilated goodness. *shakes head* Lol.

You didn't look old enough to me Tankster to remember all these "old days".
Sitting around with a beer talking about the old days? What are we talking of here mate? The 90's :)
Who said something about the Ozone layer? We are trying now to fix all the damage done to it in the "good old days".
I'm with you all the way cheap scotch :)
