I got a turtle and it's shell has heaps of moss (I think it's called moss) stuck to it's shell. I took a bit off but it was realy stuck to it. Should I take the rest off or does the turtle need it for some reason?

Thanks

don't remove it, you may damage it's shell, make sure the water is clean and get it to bask more, even if you have to do it youself by putting it a box for an hour or two a day

there a good books on keeping turtles that you can buy for about $10.

Algae on turtles is natural and harmless. Leave it there.

Remember that turtles can feel contact on their shell. Unless you enjoy the feeling of someone holding you down and scrubbing your head until you are bald, then don't do it to your turtle.

page 36 keeping long necked turtles says ; Algae problems can be prevented with clean flowing water and adequate basking facilittes
Removal is slow and may consist of several gentle scrubs with iodine solution or 1%copper sulphate solution

Time to relegate that book to the quaint old but totally out of date shelf.
