Hello everyone,

Not a major problem (I don't think) but my new male Bredli hatchling has a somewhat relaxed feeding pace. Instead of striking and constricting around his prey whilst I'm holding it, he waits for me to put it on the floor before slowly swallowing it without any coils thrown round it at all. He will not hand feed.

He is feeding well on weanling rats and putting on weight, I would just like to know whether this lack of aggression may have any implications for his development further down the line? And should I continue and attempt to encourage striking (i.e. holding and wiggling prey)?

At least there's no risk of being bitten through mistaken identity!

Any thoughts appreciated,

Cheers.

my new spottted is the same.. he yust moseys up to it sniffs it and slowly worls his way down it with his mouth... my other spotty is a guts but handles great..

Very chilled out, I'm thinking its a Queensland thing...

my jungle hatchy is the same mate, i figure with age and confidence he might change. My coastal never used to strike and coil as a young snake, now he hits it so hard and coils it like there is no tomorrow

my woma didnt strike till he got to about 4 months old and no he is great to watch at feeding times. and my jungle strikes but i have to tap her in the nose with the rat then she smashes it.

my spotted does the same and has done so for 5 years.. unless shes hungry she will strike but usually just swallows it without coils. she seems to be fine so i dont think its a problem. try and tease it for a while or letting it sniff the mouse then take it out for a min or two and then try again. he might be a little g'd up after the scent and thinks he wont get another chance so it has to strike when it smells it again
..

My coastal was the same at first for probly the first month or 2 then he got the hang of it and now strikes and coils straight away. Dont really think it would affect the snake or anything though

Thanks for the input, its good to know this behaviour is not that uncommon! I will consider myself lucky he ain't bitey as all hell.

My womas are similar, but my Bredl's are violent strikers. Main thing is that it's eating.

Could be a Bredli thing.... my son's is 5 years old, and STILL just moseys up to the rat and slowly swallows it!!!! Only VEERRRRRYYYYYY occasionally will he grab and coil the rat!!

Ok, so he's just a laid back snake. This information may aid in the naming process. SO hard to find a name that fits.

Cheers again

Striker my spotted, 90% of the time sniffs the food and then opens her mouth and lets me put the head in there before closing the mouth again. I haven't been on this forum long but I have meant to ask if anyone else has snakes that do this. Even now when shes grumpy and latched on to my thumb and wont let go, when its feeding time she'll usually do this.

My Yearling Bredli actually does both, I've only had him 3 months and his feeds have been strike-coil - eat and slowly slither up and just eat ..... not sure if it's the time of day I feed him or time between feeds but no real problem he eats ...

classic

hi everyone just bought a breding pair of classic bredlis beatufil colurs aswell umm my snakes are a bit touchies what should i do evertime i go to get them out they strike at me i bought them on saturday and feed them getting ready for cooling down so i wanna handle them heaps but there just so hard to handle and help ??

pythonz -be patient and let them settle in for a week or two

In response to this thread, my 4 week old Bredli attacked the living daylight out of the first fuzzie I've fed her since I got her last week. She coiled it and pretended to kill it for about 20 minutes before she started wriggling around into position and ate it.
