If being fed rat and mouse pellets, Rats and mice should be fed Ad Lib (as much as they want and so they don't run out). Add a dip in the wire lid (as mentioned) or attach a wire feeder to hang on the inside and they gnaw the pellets as they need them. This is also making them use some effort to get the food.
As they are small animals they also eat small amounts regularly.
