How am I to know if my snakes have mites? One of my diamonds has been excessively soaking in her water bowl, but I can't see any mites I was just wondering is there a way for sure that I can tell she has mites??? and from what I have read if she was to have mites all my other snakes would have it to but they all seem fine and I can't see any one them does anyone know what the go is???

Have a look in her water bowl you should see little black dots in there if you have black dot there proberly mites.

Mites are buggers of things at the best of times, they are hard to see when they are young.By the time you can see them them they are adult size and have spread everywhere. So if she is soaking, maybe she is coming up to shed, mine do it all the time.If you can see any small red like grains of sand like size things in the bottom of the bowl chances are there mites.
If your uncertain try and get her away from the rest of your animals and keep an eye on her.Getting rid of them is another area people have different views on this.
Cheers Mat.

theres the white pillow case trick. put her in a white pillow case for half an hour, take her out and if you see any dots, you got mites.

if you suspect mites take the snake out put it in a tub, take the water bowl out of enclosure then douse everything in the cage with TOD and give the snake a light spray as well then put it back in

repteat a week after as well

TOD = Top Of Decent you can order it off herpshop

Never treat unless you have a positive for mite!, Profalactive treatment leads to resistance
build up and causes major problems for eradication in the future.

obviously you would only suspect mites if you have found them in the water bowl or on paper ect

just erradicated a mite infestation last week. Remove snake and water from viv- spray well with Top Of Descent and close doors for 10-15 minutes and then re introduce snake. Remove substrate several days later and respray a week after that. This info can be found on the T.O.D website. The stuff does work but dont just spray once- do it for a couple of weeks- 7 days apart or so.
