Hi I'm just after a bit of advice. I have a Coastal Carpet Python who's about 2 and a half years old.

About six months ago he started biting every time I handled him. And by biting I don't mean snapping at me, he would latch onto my hand and I had to squeeze his neck until he let go. Naturally, having a snake attached to my hand freaked me out so I've been too scared to handle him since.

I really love him and want to start handling him again and was just wondering if anyone has any tips on how to ease him back into being handled??? And maybe also some advice on what to do if he does try to eat my hand!! Thanks!!!

u could use gloves when trying to handle it ? when it bites u i guess u are trying to get it out of its enclosure , maybe its cage deffensive ? . i dont think squeezing its neck until it lets go isnt helping . if it latches on try puting the snake in water - there are other options rather then hurting the snake .

I find my snakey when a bit cranky is easier to get out of her enclosure with a hook. Once she's out she is happy as Larry. I did try to pick her up with my hands once and she's missed, thank goodness. But now it's hook till she's out of her enclosure, no problems!

If you use advanced search and type in Bite or Bitten there is alot of information
on this forum. You will find loads of safe tips for removing a python that has latched on.

Good luck

Yeah I know not to hurt him. I don't mean pushing hard on his neck or anything, just lightly pulling until he knows he has to let go.

It's weird though coz he was always fine with coming out of his enclosure, it was just after about 2 mins of exploring he would decide to try eat my hand. I'm sure he was never hungry at the time either because I always feed him plenty. And I'd leave him alone for a few days after so I really have no idea why he started doing it.

as stated use a hook to get him out as it sounds like he has a good feeding respone, also think of his relative body size/weight and think of yours....... is there any reason to be scared even of a larger snappy snake just keep them away from your face and you will do fine, i have a fair few legally wc carpets that are all very snappy almost satanic and i have worked with them to the point i can even get one of them out and handle them as you would a spotted pythons as long as its one of his good days

when you initiually touch him from the hook be soft and gentle the less jerky he is when his body is lowered onto your hand via the hook the better

the wild imbricata i was talking about at the top of the post is almost ALWAYS out basking or lounging around and i touch him ever so softly about mid body and he will ither not do much or have a half go at me this is indication enough to me that he is ready to be taken out or he is in a **** mood and should be left alone

all part of keeping herps you have to get good at reading theyre body language
