ok so heres the deal, i have a jungle and a coastal, the jungle is fully grown and the sweetest little thing ever, he has never bitten a day in his life.

and i have the spawn of satan little 2 year old coastal carpet, who will bite everything that moves in front of her.

Now I love these little guys and wouldnt give them up for anything, BUT i am scared shitless of putting my hand in with them and grabbing them out of their enclosure, the jungle is alright ill just open his door and he will come out and ill grab him and he loves hugs. BUT i am still too scared to stick my hands in and grabn him out.

I have this massive fear of being bitten, i dont know why and i try to force myself just to grab em out but i cant do it.

does anyone at all have any suggestions on what i could do besides stop being a sooky doll?:(

Use a snake hook, I made one out of a coat hanger and a bit of heatshrink to round over the edges. I have a darwin that sounds very similar.

The hook enables me to tap her awake, slide the hook underneath and she is out before she knows it. Once out, she calms down. The hook really worked a treat, stopped all the bites that I was receiving.

PPL that own reptiles,particular snakes must realise that they will be bitten at some stage of owning them,the bites are generally the same,its not the bite,its actually the shock that scares most ppl.Once you realise it doesnt hurt and the snake realises your not not going to hurt them,fingers crossed it will calm down,The best bet is to hook it out of the enclosure,so you have a nice jungle and a little satan of a coastal,thats usually the other way round.Good luck with them

With my snappy ones, I just wear some gloves and a jacket for a few minutes until they calm down.

I feed mine.
I know this is not always the answer it just has been with my snappy ones.
Sounds as if you have nothing to fear with your jungle, if he comes to you thats gotta be good, my male coastal does that. Go the hook with your snappy coastal.

using a hook is good, however your fear will go once you've been hit.... then it will just be shock for the next couple hits then you should get over being bit altogether.... just get the hit over and done with cos it will happen one day when your not expecting it. and remember not to pull away when your bitten as you can rip out teeth ect.

im not actually scared of being bitten by my spotted but when he strikes repeatedly I can't put my hand in his enclosure. I know it doesnt hurt but my brain wont let me. really!

I would also recommend that you use a hook. I'm a bit of a sook myself lol and I use the golf club hooks. They are great as they are strong and let you keep your distance from the snake until they calm down and it is much easier to handle them on the hook then directly from the cage. Mine often move their way up the hook onto my arm and then you can just ditch the hook : )

metal your biggest mistake is using the word GRAB ..and if you are doing the action as well there is the problem ...best use a hook which LIFTS the snake out then you can place the snake on your hand and let it move freely ..thus limiting the stress ...all the best ..

I agree, my little bredli is a bit funny in her box, but touch her with the hook to let her know I am there then lift with the hook, and she usually cruises up the hook to me. No problems so far!

i have been bitten by the coastal before, i was ok with getting her out and handling her and what not until that happened, after she bit me i just couldnt bring myself to putitng my hand back in the enclosure lol.

yeah the jungle is fantastic, he had an absoloutely unreal owner before me who spoilt him rotten! more of a human then a snake.

and i do use the hook, its not using the hook is what i want to do. cause she is only just going to get bigger and i want her to be friendly if ever there are kids around etc. I dont want to have to keep using the hook,

I spose i just have to harden the **** up and stick my hand in and get her out if she bites me or not.

The Jungle is all good around people, except for some reason he doesnt like boys hahahahahahaha!

thankyou so much for all your advice, i thought there might of been some sort of trick of the trade to get used to it, but nope just plain old sucking it up and sticking your hand in there and letting little satan bite me.

Metal use the hook ,while she is small...with the hook you are using the lift action, which is less stressful and invasive on your snake ...as she gets to her full size ,you then will have a better chance of sliding your hand underneath her or be able to lift her off a branch what ever the situation will be at the time ...my girl use to have to be lifted out with a hook (I used a plastic coat hanger) while she was a wee thing(up till she was about 4ft) ...but now she is a big girl(wayyyy over 6feet) I can just put may hands in and lift her out with no drama's at all...you may have to use the hook for a few years depends on your snake ,your only lifting her out with the hook ,once she is out you can handle her without a hook ..the least stress you place on her now, the better for you both in the long term.:)

interesting thread :p you got quite lucky with the jungle :D

You may want to start handling your coastal more before she gets to big and can do some real damage;

Somethings I tryed with my male snappy jungle;

- Just patting it in the enclosure with a garden glove on just to lower the cage snappy response; and if your hand gets struck at what ever you do, don't flinch your hand as it may do damage to the snakes teeth.

- Handling 2-3 times a week and only put back once he went out of his strike pose or after 20-30 mins.

Anyways good luck

ok excellent, i will keep going with the snake hook until she gets used to it, cause even when i get her out with the hook she goes straight for my hand, the little bugger!

yeah the jungle doesnt like people touching his enclosure hahahahahahaha!

thanks heaps i will keep you all updated on how she goes.

also just a general question once ive fed her it usually takes her at least 4 days before i can even consider touching her, is that normal for a coastal?
