:( Well my neighbours dog finally took her last breath. She was 28yrs old & had been with Mick & Donna since she was just 3wks old, her mother couldnt feed the pups any longer & as Ebony was born with twisted front legs she was going to be put down rather then re-homed. She has bought so much joy to their lives, & also ours since meeting her. She really was such a special, gorgeous little girl, & im not quite sure how my kids will take it when i break the news to them. Even though she wasnt ours, she has become their best mate, everyday they would sit at the fence & talk to her & throw the ball for her. (she was ball mad!) She will be so very missed! Going out now to pick a plaque up for Donna, she is bringing Ebby's ashes home today & she will be put to rest in the 'fairy' garden. When the kids come home i will let them take our gift over so it can be placed in the garden with our little miss.

Thats sad your neighbors and kids will miss Ebony 28 years Is such a long time and very old for a dog

Thanks Pythrulz.....it is very sad. & yes, she had a LOVELY long life, its just so sad when it has to end! Donna isnt handling it very well, ebby was like her baby! She just had coffee with me, & was saying how hard it is to go home because ebby is no longer there to greet her :( its so devastating to see someone hurt so much! The kids will be told after school today.......i have tried to prepare them for this day, as she hadnt been well for a few weeks now, her heart was slowly dieing & she was having seizures, but after spending 4grand in the last few weeks they just werent able to save her, in the end it was time to let her go. Hopefully ive done enough to prepare them so it isnt too traumatic for them, i hate seeing them sad!

I know what it's like. I've been devastated since Sunday, my dog Spud passed away. It's horrible :(

On the other hand though, 28 years is crazy for a dog and they should be able to take solace in the fact that the dog did have such a full life. It was easier for me when Spuds mother passed away at 16 because of that reason.

What sort of dog was she? Do you have any pictures of her? That is such an amazing feat for a dog.

28 years old wow. i work at a pet cemetery and crematorium as a cremator and from what ive seen most only get 18 years if that out of them. ebony is a lucky little one and i can see she was dearly loved.

Im sorry u lost your mate KR! Its so sad! I actually dont have any photos of her, but Donna is going to give the kids some this afternoon. She was a maltese x spaniel, & yes, they realise she did have a great life, & was very lucky to have made it so far, but i guess it still hurts that she is gone. I dont think it matters how much you try to prepare for it, when it happens it is still so hard!

thats so sad, sorry to hear. on another note, surely 28 is some type of record?

I thought she would have been a small dog, Spud was a Maltese. I've heard of another spaniel living to around 23. It's horrible to lose a pet :( R.I.P

They have never looked into it, however their vet mentioned that besides ebby he knows of one other dog that reached 28, so although it isnt common, it happens.

Sure is. I have a maltese x shi tzu, he is 5, i hope he gets to live a nice long life though, i hate goodbye's. Our staffy is 6 almost 7, & still as playful as a puppy, so hopefully he 2 has awhile to go yet.

I actually just had a look if i could find the oldest dog on record, i came up with a Chocolate Lab who was 28, an Aussie Blue cattle who was 29 & an un confirmed report of a lab/cattle mix who lived to be 32 & 5 days old before he passed away........whether true or not, im not sure!

Just curious, if a dog lives until 28, do they behave like an old dog from the normal age of about 12 and just hang on for all that time, or do they stay youthful for longer?

Well with Ebony, she was like a puppy still, she played constantly but she did get tired quicker in the last 3 or so yrs. Health wise, she was in TOP health until last yr, then she started having problems with her heart rate & blood pressure, she had been on medication for the last year & a half, but it helped & she was still always ready & waiting at the fence with her ball! In the last few weeks, her heart started playing up again, & as she was still so active, the medication just didnt help much, she just refused to rest! Over the last week, she started having seizures & her tounge was purple. She was at the vet again the monday just gone & he said she was going down hill very quick & there was nothing more he could really do.......so she was bought home for one last night & she passed away in her sleep after Donna woke to her having another seizure & sat with her until it had passed......then she just went to sleep & didnt wake again. :(

Even her problem legs have never stopped her. Its hard to explain, but from the 'knees' down, her front legs were actually twisted backwards, so her paws faced the back legs......if that makes sense?? They were not able to ever correct them, but i guess that as that was all she knew she never seemed bothered by it at all. She walked a little funny if you watched closely, but it wasnt really too noticeable. She was just precious, & its getting closer to having to tell my babies......:( i so wanted to hit the 'pause' button today!

Thats an amazing long life, RIP Ebony, what an amazing little dog.

Thank you both for your kind words! Yes, she was amazing & yes we feel very blessed to have been apart of something so special. The kids will be spending alot of time with the surviving dog, Ebony's best friend Buddy. He is missing his girl heaps, he just seems so lost without her, he isnt a 'ball chaser', never has been, but 3 times today he has bought Ebby's ball to the fence for me.......naaawww its just so sad!

KJ i hope you are enjoying your 'reunion', im sure he is loving being home! Give him plenty of love xo

28yrs not bad being in the top 4 in the oldest dog in the world, I recon guiness book of records would be interested in this one,..but you'd need proof of age.

They do have all her details/records but their daughter mentioned the same thing to them & they are not really interested, to them, she was just their baby, they are not too worried about having her in a book, besides the many photo albums they have! Maybe when they are not in so much pain, they might consider it though!

sorry to hear that she has past i to lost my best friend this week so i know what your going through.28 yrs sounds like she had a wonderful long life, all the best

Wow, that is so sad. But also amazing. I had no idea that dogs could live that long.
That would be so hard after being part of their lives (and yours) for such a large amount of time.
RIP Ebony
