we have a spotted python we think it is about 14 months old only had it for a couple of weeks when my son first picked him up he got bitten and is now scared to try and pick him up . we don't think he was handled by his breeders . can he still be quitened down and any tips on how to do this would be great

just keep handling him he will carm down after time just take it day by day:)

We are newbies and have a little Jungle. She is 4 months old so at the snappy stage. We handle her for about 10 to 15 mins each day and try to do get her out of the enclosure at the same time every day. Yesterday I made sure my hands smelled of soap (washed them thoroughly) and just put my hand in and with my finger just stroked her body and she was really good. Each day we are noticing she is better and better and last night it was obvious she had calmed so much she didnt want to go back into her click clack......

So keep going...there was someone on here who had an olive python and it bit and bit and they were at their wits end. They posted to say they perservered for 4 months and suddenly just when they were ready to give up the snake settled and seemed to get it that she wasnt going to be hurt by coming out.

Something else we have notced is that if the snake is hungry they seem to go into hunting mode and they snap a bit. So make sure you are feeding enough...not to overfeed but to make sure the snake is satisfied. You might find that will make a difference too.

Also everyone says when you get a new snake you should give them about 2 weeks just to settle in without being handled. Also where is the enclosure it it is somehwere where there is a lot of movement maybe covering it with a towel to make things a bit more quiet might help.

Just some thoughts.....don't give up !!

no its in my sons room and is very quite in there trouble is we can't seem to get it to eat either it had one pinky when we first got him about 2 weeks ago but has been refusing ever scince maybe he needs a little more time to settle ??

just a thought he is spending alot of time in his bath could he be shedding and how do you tell ? our bhp's eyes go milky looking when he is ready to shed

i dont know how to get this a cross clearly to u , did u understand what i wrote in your other thread . let the snake settle in , dont try to catch /handle or do anything with it . it is biting because it is scared/stressed . its not eating because it is stressed .
let it settle in for a few weeks before trying to handle it . make sure its feeding before trying to handle it . i guess your stressing about the snake - but leave it alone .
they can go for a few months without eating .

i am was just getting some info i haven't been near him !!!
except for looking in on him he just seems to spend alot of time in his bath

good , once the snake starts to feed regularly again then u can start to handle it again . just a few mins every week and see how it go`s . i have found that spotteds are jumpy snakes [ atleast my 4 are] but they do get better over time . just deppends on the snake , weather it will be a placid snake or continue being a biter . some days my little spotted is fine , and other days its a chainsaw and will rip into my fingers.
the second smallest used to be the same , but she is geting a lote better over time.

Why do you *think* it is 14months old?
It shouldnt be eating pinky mice at that age...

And to be constructive - what should it be eating Sel....

These people are new and want help - so the least you can do is be constructive - so give the knowledge and what these people want...

Now - you could easily up the size, if you feel your python is ready - weaner mice are good... Wide enough for the python to struggle a little and leave a bump in the body... But WAIT till your python is settled - ZOOJAS has said it and I bet others have too - it takes some time!

I can't recall what my snakes were like at 14 months... But I seem to recall giving them weaners.

The other thing I read - was you've had it for a couple of weeks - this is usually the issue - snappy occurs with snakes in new home - they do stress quite a lot with the move and it does cause the blighters to be aggressive. Don't over handle them... but let them slowly get used to you - there are about a billion threads on 'my python bites' - so you're most definitely not the only one...

Every now and then you'll get constructive comments on here too :)

we are just leaving him alone for know and will try to feed him next week see how he goes i guess it's just my son is scared know not sure how to deal with that he is only 12 and loves snakes but i think i gave him a bit of a fright we will keep trying after it has settled in and get it some fuzzy mice :)
