do you have 1 or 2 thermostats?
i have 1 thermostat the cage is 1200x600x600 but there is a divider in the center. the thermostat is connected to 2 of the fittings 1 in each side

ok if you have 2 switches and 1 thermostat, 1 is for your heat (the thermostat 1) the other is for a fluro compact globe for day use. normally you would have 2 globes conected to the thermostat in case one blows you have a back up so if you only have 1 start with a 40 or 60w and see how you go
you should use a thermostat. it dosent matter what wattage globe you use if your using a thermostat as the thermostat controls how hot the enclosure gets not the globe. the higher wattage globe puts out more heat, so it will be on for less time. once the enclosure reaches the set heat, the thermostat will turn the globe off.

if the thermostat fails they normally stick on, if they stick on and you have 2 or 3 times the wattage you need, it will just keep heating, if you are running just enough watts too keep the enclosure at the right temps and the thermostat fails you should be safe, I don't know if a switchboard would helpSwitchboard (sold at kmart ect) on the thermostat output then ........
