ok if you have 2 switches and 1 thermostat, 1 is for your heat (the thermostat 1) the other is for a fluro compact globe for day use. normally you would have 2 globes conected to the thermostat in case one blows you have a back up so if you only have 1 start with a 40 or 60w and see how you go

ok thanks for all your help

you can still have the other one on a timer to come on 8-10hrs a day.

can you wire an extra batton to the 2 fittings that are conected to the thermostat? so that you have 2 heat lights and a veiwing light

you should use a thermostat. it dosent matter what wattage globe you use if your using a thermostat as the thermostat controls how hot the enclosure gets not the globe. the higher wattage globe puts out more heat, so it will be on for less time. once the enclosure reaches the set heat, the thermostat will turn the globe off.

it does matter, because thermostats can and do fail, so if you are using extra wattage you risk killing your reptiles if the thermostat fails;)

i am using a thermostat

Switchboard (sold at kmart ect) on the thermostat output then ........
if the thermostat fails they normally stick on, if they stick on and you have 2 or 3 times the wattage you need, it will just keep heating, if you are running just enough watts too keep the enclosure at the right temps and the thermostat fails you should be safe, I don't know if a switchboard would help ;)
